Last year Acadia National Park visitation increased 5.7% over 2006, to 2.2 million visitors. This represents 120,000 more visitors enjoying the park. The largest increases came in June, August and September, but numbers were down from 2006 for July. Visitation had been falling in the park since 1995, with the steepest declines between 2002 and 2005. Last year was the second year in a row that visitation had risen, with numbers returning to the 2004 level. Park camping in 2007 increased 3.1% over 2006 as well, and the number of commercial bus passengers increased 7% (5,000 visitors) to nearly 80,000 visitors. The Island Explorer shuttle bus system continued to be popular, with an increase in ridership of 6.0% (18,358) to 351,378 passengers. |
