Island Life Program
Grade 5
PROGRAM GOALS:
- To cultivate an appreciation for the role of everyday people in history.
- To gain an awareness of the role that Maine coastal islands played in developing a new nation.
- To recognize the park’s mission in protecting and preserving cultural history.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:
Students will be able to:
- Name two roles Maine islands played in the early national period 1800-1850.
- Explain three instruments used in navigation.
- Describe two island occupations and their contributions.
- Express why local history is an important part of national history.
- Give two reasons why Acadia National Park preserves local history.

Students will develop historical knowledge of enduring themes in the United States and Maine history.
Students will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the causes and effects of major events in United States history and the connections of Maine history with an emphasis on events up to 1877. (B-1)
- Demonstrate an understanding of selected themes in Maine, United States, and world history. (e.g. revolution, technological innovation, migration).(B-2)
C. Historical Inquiry, Analysis, and Interpretation
Students will learn to evaluate resource material such as documents, artifacts, maps, artworks, and literature.
Students will be able to:
- Formulate historical questions based on examination of primary and secondary sources including documents, eyewitness accounts, letters, and diaries, artifacts, real or simulated historical sites, charts, graphs, diagrams, and written texts. (C-5)

Students will understand and analyze the relationships among people and their physical environment.
Students will be able to:
- Explain how cultures differ in their use of similar environments and resources. (B-3)
