ATLANTA – The National Park Service (NPS) today announced the selection of Joshua Manley as the new superintendent for Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park in Hodgenville, Kentucky, effective April 7.
“Joshua is a dynamic leader, destined to advance the park’s great tradition of preserving and interpreting the environment that nurtured President Lincoln as a young child,” said Mark Foust, NPS South Atlantic-Gulf Regional Director.
“It is an honor to be chosen as superintendent of Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park,” said Manley. “I am excited to work alongside the devoted staff and partners dedicated to stewarding such a special place and preserving President Lincoln’s legacy. My own childhood was shaped by time spent in the Bluegrass State, and these experiences helped define who I am today. I am grateful for the opportunity to be close to family in a place that I love, doing a job that I adore.”
Manley has served as the superintendent of Ninety Six National Historic Site since 2021. As the park’s first dedicated superintendent in over three decades, he has overseen a wide expansion of programs and special events, increases in outreach and partnership efforts, and record growth in both volunteer hours and visitation. He also spearheaded the development of an official Friends group and a valuable partnership with the U.S. Army National Guard.
Manley began his NPS career in 2014, as the fire communication and education specialist for the North Atlantic-Appalachian, National Capital Area and South Atlantic-Gulf regions. He later served as the management analyst, acting administrative officer and project manager for five national parks in Western Pennsylvania, including Allegheny Portage Railroad and Friendship Hill national historic sites, Flight 93 and Johnstown Flood national memorials and Fort Necessity National Battlefield.
Prior to joining NPS, the U.S. Army combat veteran spent nine years in the military, followed by five years in baseball as a college coach, scout and manager. He has also served on boards for veterans, and youth and college baseball and hockey organizations, and coached little league.
Manley holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Miami University. He is an avid bass fisherman and sports fanatic. He and his wife, Lucy, have two children, Max and Stella. They enjoy visiting new places and finding good food while traveling for their kids’ sports teams and are always searching for ways to inspire and support their kids’ future aspirations. They look forward to relocating to the area and sharing familiar places and experiences with their family.
