HODGENVILLE –National Park Celebrates Independence Day and 150th Year Commemoration of Civil War On Monday, July 4, 2011 between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. (EDT) Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park will offer Civil War period and patriotic music by Saxton's Cornet Band in honor of the holiday and the 150th year commemoration of the Civil War. The program will take place at the Sinking Spring Farm, 2995 Lincoln Farm Road, Hodgenville. Visitors may bring a lawn chair, blanket or cushion to sit upon. The program is free and open to the pulbic. Saxton’s Cornet Band is named for an ensemble that performed in Kentucky for over sixty years, from before the Civil War period into the early twentieth century. Organized in 1989, Saxton’s Cornet Band keeps alive the spirit and high standards of the original ensemble. A co-host band of the National Civil War Band Festival at Campbellsville, Kentucky, Saxton’s Cornet Band appears regularly at the great American Brass Band Festival in Danville, Kentucky. Saxton’s has made four albums. It’s most recent, "Lincoln and Liberty, Too!" was introduced this year as a musical tribute to Abraham Lincoln, featuring music that he heard during his presidency.
