HODGENVILLE Ky – Our second presenter of the year, Dr. John Barr, will continue the 2023 presenter series, “Lincoln In Historical Memory”, on Saturday, August 19th at 12:00 p.m. EST. This free program will take place at the Larue County Public Library located near the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace.
John McKee Barr is a Professor of History at Lone Star College - Kingwood in north Houston, Texas. He is the author of Loathing Lincoln: An American Tradition from the Civil War to the Present, which in 2014 won the Jules and Frances Landry Award. This honor is "presented annually to the LSU Press book published during the year which, in the judgment of the Press, constitutes the most outstanding achievement in the field of southern studies." Dr. Barr will speak on how and why critics of Abraham Lincoln, especially in the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, were critical of the sixteenth president's background.
The theme for our 2023 presenter series is “Lincoln In Historical Memory”. Historians will shed light on how Abraham Lincoln has been remembered through time, and how his memory has changed. The presenter series continues with Dr. Matthew Norman on October 14 (University of Cincinnati) who will discuss African American memory of Lincoln, and on December 16 with Timothy Good, superintendent of Lincoln Home NHS, who will discuss how Lincoln was remembered in the nineteenth century.
