National Significance
The National Park Service (NPS) is a bureau within the U.S. Department of Internior. We preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the national park system for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. The NPS cooperates with partners to extend the benefits of natural and cultural resources conservation throughout the country and the world.
Little River Canyon National Preserve
The Preserve was created by an Act of Congress in 1992, the 15,288-acre preserve protects what is sometimes said to be the nation's longest mountaintop river, the Little River. Prior to being assigned to the National Park Service, the canyon area formed the southmost unit of Alabama's Desoto State Park.
