The Scioto River Valley and the Chillicothe area was a once flourishing center of amazing Hopewell earthworks. Join us for the Discover Hopewell Earthworks Tour led by Dr. Jared Burks, part of our annual Hopewell Discovery Day event. The bus tour begins at 7:00 a.m. with a sunrise tour of Mound City. Refreshments will not be provided. Guests are encouraged to bring their own water and snacks, and dress for variable weather. The Discover Hopewell Earthworks tour is free but by reservation only. Freshwater mussels were an important resource for Hopewellian people. They were used as food, provided pearls for ornaments and shells were utilized for hoes. Although plentiful during the Middle Woodland period, over-harvesting and low water quality have reduced their numbers drastically today.
