Natchitoches is located between the cities of Shreveport, LA to the northwest and Alexandria, LA to the south, and six miles off of Interstate 49. Airports and flight connections are available in both Shreveport and Alexandria.

Cane River National Heritage Area conveniently begins in historic Natchitoches, LA the oldest permanent settlement in the Louisiana Purchase. Traveling from Dallas, TX to Natchitoches, LA take I-20 to Shreveport and exit on I-49 traveling south. Traveling from south LA take I-49 north. Travel on Hwy 6 from points in central TX and MS.

Cane River National Heritage Area has been the location used for movies that include The Horse Soldiers, Steel Magnolias, The Man in the Moon and used in 2006 for the TV movie "A Year Without Santa" starring John Goodman. The lastest movie "For Sale by Owner" stars Scott Cooper and Tom Skerritt.
