  • 11/02/23 - NPS and FAA invite public input on historic properties identified for proposed air tour management plan at Canyon de Chelly National Monument

CHINLE, Ariz. — The National Park Service (NPS) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are developing an air tour management plan for Canyon de Chelly National Monument and are seeking public involvement.

The NPS and FAA invite public comment on the results of the FAA’s efforts to consider the potential effects of the implementation of an air tour management plan on historic properties in Canyon de Chelly National Monument and within ½ mile of the boundary of the park. This is part of the process outlined in the regulations for Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The public will be invited to comment on the draft air tour management plan for Canyon de Chelly National Monument in Spring 2024.

Public comments can be submitted through the NPS Planning, Environment and Public Comment (PEPC) website starting November 2, 2023, through December 4, 2023. The project website is available at: https://parkplanning.nps.gov/CACHATMP.

The purpose of the air tour management plan is to ensure that park resource values, including natural sounds, wilderness character, visitor experiences, wildlife, and other natural and cultural resources, are protected for current and future generations. The NPS and FAA are working towards completing the air tour management plan for Canyon de Chelly National Monument by December 31, 2024. The schedule is part of a plan approved by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit for the agencies to comply with the National Parks Air Tour Management Act of 2000.
An important part of the air tour management planning process is the inclusion of Tribes. The agencies are consulting with the Navajo Nation which has lands within and adjacent to Canyon de Chelly National Monument, and with Tribes that have a historical and cultural connection to resources within the park.

    Please visit this
NPS site and this FAA site for more detailed information about air tour management plans. Links to meeting notifications, recordings, and slide decks (where applicable) will be posted to the NPS site.
