COPPER CENTER, AK – On July 10, 2019, a small lightning-caused wildfire was reported in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. Named the Long Fire (#484) for its proximity to the toe of the Long Glacier, it was reported by a local air taxi service, and is approximately 20 miles north of Chitina. It is burning in a Limited Protection Area, and was smoldering in about 2.5 acres. NPS flew the fire on July 11, and confirmed its location, status and condition. Because it is in a Limited Protection Area, and no structures or other resources are threatened, the fire will be monitored on a regular basis.
As a reminder, campfires and other activities which unduly increase the fire danger continue to be prohibited throughout Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve until further notice. Although open campfires are prohibited in the park and preserve, the use of gas grills and barbeques at campsites will be allowed. No ground fires of any type, including wood or charcoal-based fires are permitted.
Very High to Extreme fire weather indices persist in Copper River Basin and southcentral Alaska. These areas are also under Red Flag conditions for lightning. These conditions will support significant growth where active fire exists and fires under these conditions may be resistant to control.
