COPPER CENTER, AK – Point protection operations on structures near the Chetaslina Fire
continue today. Firefighters are positioned at the Tenas Jack, Kuntson and Copper/Cheshnina
cabins and at Dadina Lake. Firefighters are working to install hose lay and sprinkler systems
around the structures as a wildfire response strategy, which protects specific assets or highly
valued resources from the wildfire without directly halting the continued spread of the fire.
The Valdez-Copper River Area Forestry and the National Park Service will host a fire information
community meeting at the Kenny Lake Community Hall at 7 pm today, July 22, 2019. The purpose of
the meeting is to provide an update on the Chetaslina Fire (#606) and the Long Fire (#484) currently
burning in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve.
Agency representatives will discuss the size, location, status, and management of the two lightningcaused
fires. This is an informational meeting where the public is welcome to learn more about fire
management, the ecological benefits of fire and to share any questions, observations or concerns
about the fires.
Below is an update for the two fires actively burning in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and
Preserve:
Chetaslina Fire (#606) – With no acreage change reported today, the current estimated acreage
remains at 2,125.
Long Fire (#484) –Fire managers from the Division of Forestry - Valdez-Copper River Area, BLM
Alaska Fire Service - South Zone, and the National Park Service continue to monitor this 5-acre fire.
Currently, there are no values or resources at risk threatened.
