Copper Center, AK – Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve Fire Management staff will conduct debris pile burns from May 19th to May 28th, if weather conditions allow. The piles are located at separate sites 15 to 22 miles East and Northeast West of the Gulkana Airport.

Multiple piles consist of trees and brush not suitable for firewood. Debris was created during a fuels reduction project that will aid in wildland fire protection to increase visitor and employee safety while providing defensible space for the park’s historical structures.

National Park Service Fire Management staff will be on-site to monitor the burning. Smoke may be visible from the Richardson Highway and from passing aircraft. The piles are expected to burn up to three days and may be ignited at separate times.

Additional park information is available on the web at www.nps.gov/wrst, or by calling (907) 822-7250 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.
