Copper Center, Alaska –Fire restrictions remain in effect at Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve.Past and prevailing weather conditions have caused extremely dry conditions. Fire danger remains elevated in Gulkana, along the McCarthy Road, and McCarthy.

The use of all open fires and activities which unduly increase the fire danger are currently prohibited. No open campfires will be allowed in the park or preserve, but the use of gas grills and barbeques at campsites will be permitted. No ground fire of any type, including wood or charcoal-based fires are permitted.

Fireworks are always prohibited in national parks.

There are currently 295 active wildfires in the state, including the 37,705 acre Chisana River 2 Fire in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park.

Wildland fire managers ask visitors and residents to follow the fire prohibitions and prevent additional fire starts. Please call 911 to report a fire. We all have a hand in a safe fire season.

Fire restrictions will remain in effect through the holiday weekend, as warmer drier conditions are expected.National Park Service will continue to monitor fuel and weather conditions when deciding to continue or lift restrictions.
