COPPER CENTER, AK - With wetter and cooler weather moving into southcentral Alaska and moderating fire activity, Superintendent Ben Bobowski announced today that effective immediately, campfires are again permitted throughout Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. The use of gas grills and barbeques at campsites is also allowed.

In the coming days, multiple waves of moisture of varying degrees are expected to traverse the state from west to east, and wetting rains are likely in inland southwest and southcentral Alaska. Thunderstorm activity is expected to be minimal.

Residents and visitors are urged to continue to use caution with anything that could ignite a fire. For statewide fire information, visit the Alaska Interagency Coordination Center website at https://fire.ak.blm.gov/ or http://www.akfireinfo.com.

More information is available at nps.gov/wrst or by calling the park’s main visitor center at 907-822-7250 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. daily.
