Seneca Falls, NY - Women's Rights National Historical Park celebrates April as National Poetry Month with a special poetry and art exhibit. The public is invited to attend a showing of poetry and art at Women's Rights NHP Visitor Center, 136 Fall Street, Seneca Falls, NY. This special exhibit is free of charge and open to the public from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., daily. Extended hours will be offered on Tuesday, April 24, when Women's Rights NHP Visitor Center is open as a polling station in Seneca Falls.

This poetry and art exhibit is part of the ARTS AFIRE! Program at Women's Rights NHP. ARTS AFIRE! programs at national parks through the United States engage the public with their cultural and natural resources through arts activities.

"Women's Rights National Historical Park interprets the history of the 1848 First Women's Rights Convention, and the park is fundamentally intertwined with our local communities through that history," said Park Superintendent Tammy Duchesne. "This show reminds us that there is an important cultural dimension to that relationship. We are proud to participate in these events in Seneca Falls and Waterloo and to be part of the Finger Lakes community."

The collage and poetry exhibit was created by workshop participants and master artist-teachers Patricia Roth Schwartz and Lynn Patti. The show remains up through the end of April. The project is a collaboration between the Seneca County Arts Council and Women's Rights NHP. Information about the recent ARTS AFIRE! Events can viewed at this link..

Also, Women's Rights National Historical Park celebrates April as National Poetry Month by collaborating with the Seneca Falls Library in a local poetry program for young children. The Seneca Falls Library is sponsoring the "I Have a Poem in My Pocket" program during April.

Each 2nd grade student in Seneca Falls will receive a short poem, which they will practice at school and at home. From April 22nd through April 30th the students will carry a poem in their pockets, and they are invited to visit any participating local businesses during regular business hours. Students will say, "I have a poem in my pocket," and they will read their poem to any employee. In return, businesses will "reward" the students with a small incentive.
