A project to improve safety and maintain the roadbed is scheduled to begin September 3 on the six miles of US Highway 385 running through Wind Cave National Park. Hills Material Company out of Rapid City received the $1.2 million contract to cold mill and overlay road surfaces to remove surface irregularities and improve the structural integrity of the highway. Existing guardrails will also be improved to meet new highway safety standards.

The project is expected to be completed by October 18. Crews will be working from 7 a.m. to dark, everyday except Sunday. Traffic through construction zones will be maintained with flaggers and pilot cars, and motorist can expect short delays while work is in progress. Funding for the project comes from the Federal Highway Administration, Public Lands Highway program.
