With the recent snows and spring rains, park managers at Wind Cave National Park have decided to postpone several prescribed fires planned for this spring. The park had planned to burn an estimated 565 total acres in a series of four small burns south of the Rankin Ridge Fire Tower and east of Highway 87. This area is adjacent to 1,200 acres burned last fall.

"With the amount of spring growth that has already occurred, we do not believe the burn's objectives are still attainable this spring," said park Superintendent Linda L. Stoll. "We will revisit conducting this burn next fall when fuel and moisture conditions are more favorable."

Prescribed fires are carefully conducted under identified and approved prescription conditions. Factors such as humidity, fuel moisture, wind speed and direction, and short and long-range weather patterns are all considered in establishing the acceptable conditions for conducting a prescribed fire.
