WIND CAVE NATIONAL PARK, S.D. – Beginning at 6 o’clock tonight, Wind Cave National Park is lifting fire restrictions put in place last month. Over the weekend the park received over an inch of rainfall, greatly lessening the threat of a wildfire. Visitors and staff will now be allowed to have open fires in existing fire grates or in charcoal grills in the Elk Mountain Campground or nearby picnic area. Smoking will be allowed except in the park’s backcountry. “We still need to be vigilant regarding fires,” said Superintendent Linda L. Stoll. “One good soaking does not make up for years of drought. Historically, the park’s biggest fires have occurred in September and October, and we caution everyone to always be careful with fire.” For more information, please call the park at 605/745-4600. |
