Wind Cave National Park Superintendent Linda L. Stoll announced that on February 5, 2004, U.S. Magistrate Judge Marshall Young convicted Eugene Healy, 46, of Yankton, South Dakota, for firing a weapon and killing wildlife within the park. He plead guilty to both misdemeanor counts and was ordered to pay $50 in restitution and fined $750, with $375 suspended for a year assuming there are no future violations. Healy was charged December 29 after a park ranger on patrol witnessed him shooting a coyote along NPS Road #5.
Chief Ranger Rick Mossman reminds all park visitors that the possession of a firearm or the destruction or removal of natural features from national parks are prohibited by law and subject to fines and or jail. Anyone who has information regarding poaching or other illegal activities occurring within Wind Cave National Park are strongly encouraged to contact the park at 745-4600.
