A. Update:

1.When reported: Began as a prescribed burn in Wind Cave National Park Monday, April 13.

2.Location: The fire is burning within the Keyhole (southern portion) of Wind Cave National Park

3.Current status: Crews worked throughout the night establishing a line around 80% of the fire. No percent of containment yet. Crews hope to tie in the last section of the line today and strengthen the entire line.

4.Weather forecast: Red Flag Warning. Forecast calls for hot, dry winds with gusts up to 30 mph out of the south. Wednesday's forecast calls for a significant reduction in fire behavior and will give fire crews an excellent opportunity to strengthen established fire lines.

5.Structures Threatened: Three ranches along the park's eastern boundary and two park structures.

6.Objectives for today:

a.Provide for public and firefighter safety

b.Keep the fire west of Red Valley Road (NPS 5), north of 7-11 (101) Road, and east of Highways 385 and 87.

B. Size:

1. Acres involved: Estimated 4,500 acres from the escape plus 1,000 from the original prescribed burn.

C. Closures/ Evacuations:

1. The park's backcountry and hiking trails are closed. Visitors are strongly encouraged to stay on established roads and watch for emergency vehicles.

2.No evacuations have been ordered at this time.

3. Park roads NPS 5 and 6 (Red Valley Road and Highland Creek Road) are closed due to heavy fire traffic.

D. Fire Conditions:

1. Terrain: Steep and rugged

2.Fuel type: Timber and prairie

3.Weather Conditions: There is a Red Flag Warning for today with hot, dry winds out of the south.

E. Resources Involved:

1.Agencies Involved: Local, State, and Federal agencies.

2.The fire is being managed as a Type III incident. There is a Type II team on order.

3.Number: 70 people assigned to the incident with additional resources arriving throughout the day.

4.Air Resources:

a.Types of ships: 2 South Dakota Air National Guard Blackhawk Helicopters and 3 Single Engine Air Tankers (SEATS) and 2 Type I helicopter is on order.

b.Dipping location: The helicopters are dipping out Cold Brook Reservoir near Hot Springs.
