Hikers learn more about what they're seeing at the crest of Mt. Tenjo, one of the park's rarely-visited sites.

Join park rangers for an arduous, adventure hike this Sunday, June 17 at 9 a.m. Mount Tenjo, the peak that towers over Orote Peninsula and Apra Harbor, was once home to the World War I-era Camp Barnett. Here, U.S. Marines installed a battery of guns and served an idyllic tour of duty, removed from the bustle of Agana and Sumay. A few decades later, the mountain became an important landmark for another generation of Marines in the 1944 Battle for Guam. Today, Mt Tenjo is rarely-visited, but holds a wealth of historic remains and one of the best views of southern Guam.

Meet park rangers at 9 a.m. at the Asan Bay Overlook on Nimitz Hill and we'll caravan to a hiking trail that leads to Mt. Tenjo. Please be advised this is a challenging three hour hike through tall sword grass and difficult terrain. Due to the difficulty and remoteness of the trail, people with health issues should not attempt this hike. Participants must be physically fit, wear sturdy shoes, long pants, a hat, a long-sleeved shirt, and be prepared to get muddy and wet. Please bring at least two quarts of water, gloves, a snack, and sunscreen.  

The free hike is limited to the first forty people who arrive at the Asan Bay Overlook. We will depart promptly at 9 am, so don't be late. For more information, call 333-4050.
