The National Park Service celebrates its 94th birthday this week, and next month Americans will recognize National Public Lands Day. So over the next several weeks, War in the Pacific NHP will offer a free movie series to the public at the T. Stell Newman Visitor Center in front of the Navy Base main gate. Beginning this Saturday, August 21, visitors can watch The National Parks: America’s Best Idea which dramatically portrays how America’s most treasured places were saved for all to enjoy.

“The National Parks: America's Best Idea is a six-episode series directed by Ken Burns and written and co-produced by Dayton Duncan. Filmed over the course of more than six years at some of nature's most spectacular locales – from Acadia to Yosemite, Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon, the Everglades of Florida to the Gates of the Arctic in Alaska - The National Parks: America's Best Idea is nonetheless a story of people: people from every conceivable background – rich and poor; famous and unknown; soldiers and scientists; natives and newcomers; idealists, artists and entrepreneurs; people who were willing to devote themselves to saving some precious portion of the land they loved, and in doing so reminded their fellow citizens of the full meaning of democracy.” (from

The six episodes will be shown one per week, both Saturday and Sunday, over the next six weeks.

The film is free and open to the public. No reservations or appointments are necessary and everyone is encouraged to attend.
