Meet at the Veterans Cemetery on Route 6 and we'll caravan to the short hiking trail that leads to three large coastal defense guns in Piti. Although these are the only guns in their original positions protected by the park, we'll discover another reason they are particularly unique. Please wear sturdy shoes and bring water. (45 min) February 7, Sunday: 2:00 pm at Visitor Center - "The Battle of Philippine Sea." Join us for a presentation on the Battle of Philippine Sea, a.k.a. "The Great Marianas Turkey Shoot" at the T. Stell Newman Visitor Center. Learn interesting facts about the decisive naval battle of World War II which eliminated the Imperial Japanese Navy's ability to conduct large-scale carrier actions and allowed the US amphibious invasion of the Mariana Islands. (1 hour) February 13, Saturday: 9:00 am at Ga'an Point - "Keep Guam Beautiful." The cleanup will take place at Ga'an Point - a former WWII invasion beach. Cold water in coolers, protective gloves, and trash bags will be provided. Please bring refillable water bottles and wear closed-toe shoes, hats, and sunscreen. Stell Newman Visitor Center to learn about the American's island hopping strategy used throughout the Pacific War. This week's presentation features the battle of Iwo Jima. (45 min) February 21, Sunday: 2:00 pm at Visitor Center - "Science Sunday." Science Sunday features current research projects happening right here in Guam and the Micronesia region. Join a park ranger for a presentation on infamous Unit 731, a covert biological and chemical warfare research and development unit of the Imperial Japanese Army that undertook lethal human experimentation from 1937 through 1945. (1 hour) February 28, Sunday: 2:00 pm at Visitor Center - "African Americans in the Pacific War." In honor of African American History month, we are inviting everyone for a presentation on the role of African American servicemen in the Pacific Theater of WWII. They served their country with distinction, made valuable contributions to the war effort, and earned high praises and commendations for their struggles and sacrifices. (1 hour) |
