CHEYENNE OKLAHOMA: Washita Battlefield National Historic Site successfully hosted the seventh annual Owa Chita summer camp this past week (June 28-July 2). 25 local campers enjoyed a variety of activities related to the natural resources and history of the park. Some of the activities included candle making, Cheyenne Indian games, nocturnal animal painted rocks and letterboxing. We also had sessions led by Black Kettle National Grassland about animals and archeology. The campers also got to experience and learn about fire safety presented by the Cheyenne Fire Department. The campers traveled back in time to learn about the US Cavalry with the park volunteer group Troop J. Campers also participated in the “Owa Chita PowWow” with JR Lonelodge and danced a circle dance. Owa Chita ended on Friday with a birthday party for the 25th Anniversary of the establishment of Washita Battlefield National Historic Site. We had tons of fun and learned a lot! We cannot wait for next summer’s camp!
