Please join us at a public meeting to update the public on two projects at Virgin Islands National Park. The meeting will be held on Thursday, November 16, 2023 at 5:30 p.m. AST at the Visitor Center, Cruz Bay, St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands. This meeting is an update on these projects, there is no public comment for any plans at this time.

The first topic is about a plaque that will be installed at Ram Head as a result of the 2022 Omnibus Public Law (PL No. 117-328). This law - among many other unrelated actions - directed the Secretary of the Interior to install a plaque at the peak of Ram Head in the U.S. Virgin Islands National Park on St. John to commemorate the 1733 rebellion of the enslaved people in St. John.

The second topic is about upcoming asbestos removal at Caneel Bay. The NPS secured funding for the removal of asbestos-containing material debris from the site of the former site. A contractor will remove non-friable asbestos-containing materials that are present in above-ground hurricane debris at the site and not attached to buildings or facilities, and legally dispose of them in an off-site permitted landfill located in the continental United States. The start date for mobilization is planned for November 28, 2023. On-site removal work should last approximately 3-4 weeks. During this time, you may notice increased truck traffic and equipment noise. To protect health and safety, dust control procedures will be followed throughout on-site work to prevent asbestos fibers from being released into the environment.
