America's National Parks Author Series

Vicksburg National Military Park and American’s National Parks™ will be hosting an author series of four speaking programs at Vicksburg National Military Park and other community sites. All invited authors have or are in the process of publishing new and detailed works on aspects of the Vicksburg campaign that bring this crucial city to the forefront of American history.

Each author's program will be held at the Vicksburg National Military Park visitor center auditorium unless otherwise noted in bold print. All events outside the park will have direct address below and times to make planning easier.

America's National Park bookstore will host a book signing event where the author's titles can be purchased and signed. The signing events are held after the program.

Timothy B. Smith

This presentation will be on “The Top 10 Things I’ve Learned While Studying Vicksburg”. Smith is one of the foremost historians on the Vicksburg campaign and the Western Theater of the Civil War.

Smith teaches history at the University of Tennessee at Martin and is the author of numerous books on the Civil War and its battlefields, including his most recent book Early Struggles for Vicksburg: The Mississippi Central Campaign and Chickasaw Bayou, October 25-December 31, 1862.

Linda Barnickel

This presentation will be on her book Milliken's Bend: A Civil War Battle in History and Memory, discussing the pivotal battle where newly trained African American soldiers helped change the perspective for enlistment in the Union war effort and how the battle has been rememebered.

Barnickel is an archivist and freelance writer with master’s degrees from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and The Ohio State University. Passionate about discovering the hidden and fascinating stories of history, she is interested in local history, military history, oral history, and the cultural power of archives.

Isaiah Tadlock

This presentation is called "American Tapestry: Soldiers from Milliken's Bend." Mr. Tadlock will be discussing his in-depth research on the unique stories and backgrounds of the soldiers who fought the pivotal Battle of Milliken's Bend on June 7, 1863.

Mr. Tadlock is an amateur genealogist and an adjunct professor of history at Lone Star College in Houston, Texas. He has researched the battle of Milliken’s Bend and the regiments that fought it since 2011. Mr. Tadlock's is currently working on a book on his presentation material.
