General Grant marched his army from Memphis, down the Louisiana side of the Mississippi River, then crossed, with the help of the Union Navy, at Bruinsburg Crossing. From here, the general moved his soldiers northeast, fighting battles with the Confederates at Port Gibson, Raymond, Jackson, Champion Hill, and Big Black River Bridge, before reaching the outskirts of Vicksburg. ![]() |
