58th Ohio Infantry

Monument located at the junction of Union Avenue and Sherman Avenue. At Chickasaw Bayou (26 Dec 1862 - 2 Jan 1863), the regiment was attached to Brig. Gen. Francis P. Blair, Jr.'s 1st Brigade, of Brig. Gen. Frederick Steele's 4th Division, Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman's Expeditionary Force, and commanded by Lt. Col. P. Dister (killed). At Post of Arkansas (9-11 Jan 1863), the regiment was attached to Brig. Gen. Francis P. Blair, Jr.'s, 1st Brigade, of Brig. Gen. Frederick Steele's 1st Division, Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman's XV Army Corps, of Maj. Gen. John A. McClernand's Army of the Mississippi, and commanded by Capt. B. Benkler. [Refer to Edwin Bearss' The Vicksburg Campaign, Volume I, pages 229 and 416.]
