Neither the detachment, the City Guards, nor the Signal Corps are mentioned in the official records except in the statement of the organization of the Confederate Army of Vicksburg. Approximately 25 men of the 54th Alabama were cut off from their unit at the Battle of Champion Hill, 16 May 1863, and retreated into Vicksburg, participating in the defense of the city in Maj. J. R. Steven's Battalion of Stragglers from Loring's Division, and commanded by Lt. J.P. Abney. [Refer to Edwin Bearss' The Vicksburg Campaign, Volume III, pages 779, 780, 873 and 968.]
