This unit was attached to Col. Giles A. Smith's 1st Brigade, of Maj. Gen. Francis P. Blair's 2d Division, Maj. Gen'ls William T. Sherman's and Frederick Steele's XV Army Corps, and commanded by Maj. Daniel Chase, Capt. Edward C. Washington (mortally wounded 19 May 1863), Capt. Charles Ewing, and Capt. Charles C. Smith. During the assault of 19 May 1863, Capt. Washington and Lt. Justus A. Boles were mortally wounded and the unit suffered as a whole 21 killed and 49 wounded.
