This unit was attached to Brig. Gen. James C. Tappan’s Brigade, of Maj. Gen. John G. Walker’s Division, Maj. Gen. Richard Taylor’s District of Western Louisiana, in Lt. Gen. Edmund Kirby Smith’s Trans-Mississippi Department, and commanded by Col. J.R. Shaler. Ordered to northeast Louisiana, the unit reached Monroe, LA, the second week in June 1863. During the fourth week of June 1863, the unit moved against the plantations in Madison Parish, LA, which were growing cotton for the United States Treasury.
