You are invited to join the Tumacácori Weed Whackers on Saturday, September 25, 2021, to remove invasive weeds from Tumacácori National Historical Park. On National Public Lands Day (NPLD), more than 150,000 volunteers across the country will participate in activities aimed at restoring and caring for our public lands. Organized each year by the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF), NPLD is the nation’s largest single-day volunteer effort for public lands. Because we know you all missed participating in NPLD in 2020, there will be two opportunities to volunteer at Tumacácori this year!
From 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., early birds and their families can join the “Goathead Attack Squad” to remove the invasive puncture vine (aka “goathead”) from around the church. This family-friendly morning will be spent pulling plants and removing seeds from the mission grounds. This project will not be strenuous but will require bending and kneeling.
From 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. there will be a “Weed Walk” along the Anza trail. This portion of the day will involve walking a section of trail through Tumacácori NHP and along the Santa Cruz River. While taking in the scenery of the area, volunteers will learn from the park’s biological science staff how to identify and remove invasive plants in the field. This activity will be moderately strenuous and will involve a hike of up to 4 miles, as well as a good amount of bending and kneeling.
All NPLD participants are encouraged to wear long pants, closed-toe shoes, and sun protection. Bring plenty of water and snacks. Work gloves will be provided, although participants are welcome to bring their own. Masks are required to be worn inside all federal buildings, including the visitor center, museum, and church. NPLD projects will take place outside with lots of room to practice social distancing. Volunteers will earn service hours and a coupon good for free entrance to any national park or federal fee area. Admission to all national park sites will be free on this day.

Durante el Día Nacional de las Tierras Públicas (NPLD), más de 150,000 voluntarios a través del país participarán en proyectos para restaurar y cuidar nuestras tierras públicas. Organizado cada año por la Fundación Nacional de Educación Ambiental (NEEF), NPLD es el mayor evento de esfuerzo voluntario para las tierras públicas en el país. Ye que no hubo oportunidad para participar en NPLD en 2020, ¡este año habrá dos oportunidades para contribuir como voluntarios en Tumacácori!
De 8:30 a.m. a 11:30 a.m., usted y su familia pueden acompañar la "Operación ataque de torito" para eliminar esta especie exótica (también conocida como "abrojo de flor amarilla") de los alrededores de la iglesia. Voluntarios pasarán la mañana sacando plantas de los terrenos de la misión. Este proyecto no será agotador, pero requerirá la capacidad de agacharse y arrodillarse.
De la 1:00 p.m. hasta las 3:00 p.m., habrá una “Caminata para eliminar malezas” a lo largo del sendero Anza. Durante este tiempo voluntarios van a caminar una sección del sendero Anza a través del Parque Histórico Nacional de Tumacácori y a lo largo del río Santa Cruz. Mientras disfrutan del paisaje por el sendero, voluntarios aprenderán cómo identificar y eliminar las plantas invasoras. Esta caminata es moderadamente difícil, se caminará hasta 6.5 km, y es necesario agacharse y arrodillarse.
Todos los participantes de este evento deben usar pantalones largos, zapatos cerrados y protección solar. Traiga suficiente agua y bocadillos. Se proporcionarán guantes de trabajo, participantes pueden traer guantes propios.
