Following guidance from the White House, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and recommendations from local and state public health authorities, and in consultation with the National Park Service (NPS) Public Health Service Office, Tumacácori National Historical Park will be temporarily closing the park visitor center and museum and suspending all public programming beginning Tuesday, March 17.
“We have been asked to limit gatherings of people to less than ten at one time,” according to Bob Love, park Superintendent. “Our visitor center and interpretive programs routinely have crowds considerably larger than ten. By closing the visitor center, we are helping to promote social distancing and reduce the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
The mission grounds and historic church remain open during normal park hours, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Anza Trail is available 24 hours a day, as usual. Restrooms and a water fountain remain available. Staff will be on hand to answer questions, while maintaining appropriate distancing.
Superintendent Love added, “We expect this temporary closure to last until the end of March. We will reassess conditions at that time.”
The NPS Office of Public Health, Office of Risk Management, and the Division of Law Enforcement, Security, and Emergency Services, in conjunction with the Department of the Interior (DOI) Office of Occupational Safety and Health and Office of Emergency Management (OEM), are responsible for managing and supporting activities to prevent, protect against, mitigate, and respond to such hazards. Over the last couple of weeks, they have been actively engaged and coordinating efforts to respond to the COVID-19 outbreak.
The NPS is implementing some temporary closures and modifications to operations to help protect employees, partners, volunteers, and visitors.
