TUMACACORI, AZ - Tumacácori National Historical Park and the National Park Service invite everyone to get to know their national parks during National Park Week. This year's dates are April 20 - 28, with free admission to all national parks April 22 - 26.

"This year's theme, 'Did you know…' provides a fun way to discover the wonders of America's national parks," said National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis.  "For example, did you know that there are national parks in 49 of 50 states?  Did you know that national parks include seashores, battlefields, and historic homes?  Did you know that the country's highest peak, lowest point, tallest tree, deepest lake, and longest cave are in national parks?  Did you know that you probably live within an hour or two of a national park?  National Park Week is a great time for all Americans to visit a nearby national park to camp and hike, watch wildlife, stroll a Civil War battlefield, and connect with our heritage and each other."

National Park Week is also a great time to explore your local parks and trails. Did you know that Tumacácori National Historical Park is one of the nation's oldest parks? Tumacácori was established in 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt - the 21st of 401 National Park Service sites. Did you know that the Tumacácori Mission dates back to the year 1691? That's the year that missionary Father Kino first visited the O'odham village where the mission was founded. Did you know that a National Historical Trail runs through Tumacácori National Historical Park? One mile of the Juan Bautistade Anza National Historical Trail, commonly known as the "Anza Trail," follows the Santa Cruz River through the park - a shady path enjoyed by bird watchers, horse riders, and walkers alike.

Take advantage of the free admission during this special week to enjoy some of the activities at Tumacácori, for which there is no additional charge any day of the year. The park's gift and bookstore will be offering a 15% discount on all purchases throughout the week. Guided tours will be available each day during National Park Week at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. There is also a self-guided tour, a15-minute video, and an excellent museum available throughout the day. An historic craft demonstrator will be making tortillas at the park Wednesday through Sunday, joined by an O'odham basket weaver on Saturday and Sunday, the 27th and 28th. For children and the young at heart, the Junior Ranger "Seek and Find" is a fun way to learn about Tumacácori. Successful Junior Rangers earn a Tumacácori Junior Ranger badge and an activity book to enjoy at home following their park visit. And, did you know there is free park admission for children under 16 every day?

"April is a beautiful month to visit a park in southern Arizona!" commented Tumacácori Superintendent Robert Love, "Did you know there are twenty - two national park sites in Arizona alone? We are fortunate to have two of them, Saguaro National Park and Tumacácori, within minutes of our homes here in the Santa Cruz Valley!" Come on out and enjoy your parks for free during National Park Week! For more information about Tumacácori NHP, visit the park's website at: www.nps.gov/tuma.
