The Honorable Leslie A. Bowman, Magistrate Judge, will administer the Oath of Allegiance to America's newest citizens during a special naturalization ceremony Tuesday, Sept. 17, at Tumacácori National Historical Park. The 12 citizenship candidates all originate from Mexico. Bob Love, superintendent of Tumacácori, is the keynote speaker. The Marching Hawks and the ROTC Honor Guard of Rio Rico High School will both be participating in this special ceremony. This event is part of USCIS' annual celebration of Constitution Day and Citizenship Day. More than 18,000 people will become U.S. citizens during approximately 180 naturalization ceremonies across the country from Sept. 16 to Sept. 23. New to its Constitution Day and Citizenship Day celebration this year, USCIS is asking new citizens and their families and friends to share the experience via Twitter using the hashtag #newUScitizen. Constitution Day and Citizenship Day is commemorated every September 17 in honor of the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787. In 1952, President Harry Truman signed a bill formalizing the celebration of Citizenship Day. In 2004, Congress established September 17 as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day. |
