Roosevelt, AZ - Tonto National Monument invites the public to assist with the collection of bird species data for the National Audubon Society’s 121st Annual Christmas Bird Count on Saturday, December 19, 2020. Pre-registration is not required. This drop-in event is free and open to the public. Two guided birding excursions will take place; a morning session at 8am, and an afternoon session at 3pm. Participants will record their personal time spent tallying species, and can leave the event whenever they wish.

Anyone wishing to participate should meet up with park staff at the Visitor Center at 8am or 3pm. Bird identification guides, and data recording materials will be provided. Participants should bring their own binoculars, and come prepared to walk into a riparian area on an unpaved dirt trail with loose rocks. All levels of birding experience are encouraged to participate in this citizen science experience.

This is an outdoor event, where individuals will follow CDC guidelines and remain spaced at least 6 feet apart. Participants are asked to wear a mask inside the visitor center and when outdoor social distancing is not possible.

The Christmas Bird Count is the nation’s longest running community science bird project, and the data is used to study long-term health and status of bird populations across North America. This project helps Tonto National Monument by providing an updated species inventory.
