Roosevelt, AZ –Tonto National Monument will increase fire restrictions beginning Friday, May 14, 2021. These restrictions coincide with similar restrictions going into effect on other public lands in southern Arizona.

The fire restrictions prohibit the following acts:

  1. Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire, campfire, charcoal, coal, or wood stove fire, including within a developed recreation site or improved site [36 CFR 2.13(a)]. Exception:  The use of liquid petroleum or LPG fueled stoves, lanterns, or heating devices is allowed as long as such devices meet the fire underwriter’s specifications for safety.

  2. Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle [36 CFR 2.21(a)]

  3. Using explosives or any incendiary device; fireworks are always prohibited on public lands – 36 CFR 2.38(b)

The purpose of these restrictions is to ensure the safety of park visitors and employees, and for the protection of National Park Service lands, resources, and facilities.  These restrictions are dependent upon fire activity and weather conditions and will remain in effect until conditions improve.  These restrictions are pursuant to the authority contained in Title 36 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Sections 1.5(a)(1) and 1.5(a)(3).

Although the sale of ground and hand-held fireworks and their use in some locations is legal in Arizona, the use and possession of all fireworks is always prohibited on National Park Service lands, including Tonto National Monument.

These restrictions will remain in effect until conditions improve.  Violation of these restrictions is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000, or imprisonment for no more than six months, or both.

We ask the public to please recreate safely and responsibly. Avoid high-risk outdoor activities, follow local area health orders, practice Leave No Trace principles, and avoid crowding.
