Thing to Do
Watch the Sunset

NPS/ Artist-in-Residence Kurt Wheeler
Colors change dramatically on the Waterpocket Fold as the sun begins to set. Watch the reds and oranges deepen and contrast with the darkening sky.
Choose the sunset view that best suits your needs:
- For an easy stroll, consider the short trail up to Panorama Point, 2 miles (3.2 km) west of the visitor center, on State Route 24.
- At the end of the 1 mile (1.7 km) dirt Panorama Point Road, take the easy 0.4 mile (0.6 km) Sunset Point Trail for a beautiful view at sunset.
- For a moderate hike, consider the 1 mi (1.7 km) Fremont River Trail, which starts as an easy walk along the river, before rising steeply (480 ft/146 m elevation gain) and facing the dramatic Wingate Sandstone cliffs. This trailhead is located at the Fruita Campground amphitheater parking lot, off the Scenic Drive.
- In the strenuous category with an elevation gain of 590 ft (180 m), Chimney Rock Loop (3.6 mi/ 5.9 km) offers fantastic views of the colorful cliffs and Henry Mountains in the distance. This trailhead is located on State Route 24, about 3 miles (4.8 km) west of the visitor center.
All distances listed are one-way. Consider a headlamp for hiking safely back to your vehicle after dark. Additional trail information and the Fruita Area Map and Guide.
