Built by the Spanish in St. Augustine to defend Florida and the Atlantic trade route, Castillo de San Marcos National Monument preserves the oldest masonry fortification in the continental United States and interprets more than 450 years of cultural intersections.
How to Participate
Park rangers at Fort Matanzas National Monument are able to conduct live interactive classroom presentations through distance learning video conferences.This free program is a great way to introduce your students to this amazing national park. Email casa_education@nps.gov to schedule your class or learn more!
Objectives:
Students will virtually explore a primary source (Castillo de San Marcos), analyze a secondary source (Park Ranger’s presentation), and answer discussion questions to identify the significance of St. Augustine.
Program Length and Grade
This 40-minute program is designed for students in grades 3-5.
Before the Distance Learning Program

Coordinate a date/time(s) for the program and share platform information with the park.

During the Distance Learning Program

Materials needed: physical or digital version of the worksheet and something to record answers with.

The teacher is responsible for classroom management during the program. This includes calling on students throughout the program and helping to ensure that their answers and comments are understood by all. The teacher is also responsible for facilitating the questions at the end of the program.

The park ranger will use onscreen visuals, questioning, and storytelling to support curriculum standards and connect with the students' experiences.
