The Armistead-Pettiford home, built prior to the Civil War, was designed to assist freedom seekers through water routes with coordination from northern sailors. The escape route was a underground tunnel leading from the house to the river. The entrances to the passage way still exist in the home. The Armistead-Pettiford Home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Pico-Armstead-Pettiford home.
