Kimberly L Simmons

I am honored to carry the leagacy of the Underground Railroad as a descendant of a "passenger". My Great,Great,Great Grandmother was the first fugitive slave to escape through the Wisconsin(Milwaukee)route. Her name was Caroline Quarrels and her escape has been well documented by quite a few sources in the State of Wisconsin.(ie: U of Wisconsin, Black Historical Society of Wisconsin, Milton Historical Society, etc.) I recently visited Milwaukee, where there is a commerative mural being placed in her honor by the State of Wi. Transportation Dept. Also, a play was written by James DeVita and performed by First Stage Children's Theater in Milwaukee called "A Midnight Cry", Jan.24 thru Feb 23. I am very concerned with the lack of information about the URR in Wisconsin as it was a pivotal route of escape and so little has been said about it. I would like to get involved further with the Network to Freedom as I have a very personal stake in its mission.
