Harriet Beecher Stowe

When President Abraham Lincoln met Harriet Beecher Stowe, he reportedly remarked, "So, this is the little lady who wrote that book that made this great [Civil] war.

Stowe’s best selling Uncle Tom’s Cabin, published in 1852, focused national attention on the evils of slavery, as well as the bravery of freedom seekers. Stowe based her novel, including the unforgettable image of Eliza crossing the icy river, on freedom seeker memoirs, including Josiah Henson’s publication.
