Discovering Archaeology & the Underground Railroad

Kentucky

January 20, 2018

This Junior Ranger Program: Discovering Archaeology and the Underground Railroad will be held at the Oldham County History Center, Saturday, January 20, 2018, 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. This fun, hands-on program is open to children ages 6-12, cost is $5 per child. (There will also be two additional programs on Saturday, February 17 and on Saturday, March 17, cost is $5 per child for each program) The program will take place at the Rob Morris Educational Building located at 207 W. Jefferson St., La Grange, KY, on the History Center campus.

Participants in Discovering Archaeology and the Underground Railroad will learn about the Oldham County History Center’s archaeological excavations at the Gatewood Plantation in nearby Trimble County. Through activities and crafts, students will explore the field of archaeology and how it relates to the Underground Railroad. They will learn how archaeology can help interpret the past, present and future history of Oldham County. Participants for the sessions will be able to tour exhibits in the Peyton Samuel Head Family Museum that explore slavery in Oldham County and show archaeological finds from the many public digs that have been held at the Gatewood Plantation. They will be introduced to Henry Bibb, a freedom seeker with ties to Oldham County who escaped and relocated to Canada. Bibb lived at the Gatewood Plantation before escaping slavery.

The goal of the Junior Ranger Program is to teach children different aspects about archaeology in addition to Oldham County’s role in the Underground Railroad. As part of the program, children will learn the Junior Ranger Motto and Junior Ranger Pledge. Upon completion of a series of activities focusing on archaeology they will be eligible to receive an official Junior Ranger badge and certificate.
