Enjoy Free Find Your Park Summer Concerts at Sleeping Bear Dunes
Beginning June 24, the Find Your Park Concert Series will offer free public concerts throughout the summer at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (National Lakeshore). The venue will be either the Platte River or D. H. Day Campground Amphitheaters (see individual listings for details). A park pass is required. All concerts begin at 8:00 p.m. and will last about an hour.

Researcher to Discuss Avian Botulism
Over the past decade, there has been an increased incidence of bird deaths in Lake Michigan due to Type E avian botulism. Over 6,500 dead birds have been documented within the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (National Lakeshore) alone. Scientists from the National Park Service (NPS), U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee have been conducting a collaborative research project to determine the causes of these botulism outbreaks - work that includes underwater research in Good Harbor Bay.

Tourism to Sleeping Bear Dunes Creates Economic Benefits
A new National Park Service (NPS) report shows that 1,535,633 visitors to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (National Lakeshore) in 2015 spent an estimated $163.4 million in communities near the park. That spending supported 2,586 jobs in the local area and had a cumulative benefit to the local economy of $205.8 million.

Sleeping Bear Dunes is recruiting 10 middle/high school students, grades 8-11, to spend a week camping in the park while playing, learning, and providing service. There is no participation fee. The National Lakeshore will provide all group gear and food during the trip.

National Lakeshore Reopens Portions of the Alligator Hill Trail
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (National Lakeshore) will reopen portions of the Alligator Hill Trail on Thursday, November 19, 2015. The trail has been impassable since a severe storm blew down thousands of trees on August 2, 2015. National Park Service crews and National Lakeshore volunteers have completed work on the Easy Loop, Advanced Loop, Islands Lookout, and Big Glen Lookout. Over 2,800 trees have been cleared on six miles of trail. Clearing of approximately 1,000 more trees from the two-mile Intermediate Loop and trail access from Forest Haven Drive will take place in the spring of 2016.

Sleeping Bear Dunes Addresses Concerns about Storm Impacted Areas
On August 2, 2015, the massive storm that swept through Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (National Lakeshore) caused substantial blowdown of the park’s trees. The National Lakeshore’s initial storm recovery priority was to reopen heavily used visitor areas such as the D. H. Day Campground, Glen Haven Historic District, and the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail. The National Park Service (NPS) is now planning its response to wildland fire fuel loading associated with the storm.

National Lakeshore Presents September Artist-In-Residence Program
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (National Lakeshore) welcomes their September Artist-In-Residence (AIR) for 2015; Cara O’Brien, a Michigan artist currently working and living in Whitehall, Michigan. Ms. O’Brien’s work explores the possibilities of high fire porcelain clay, driftwood, aged metal, and other objects. Her mixed media works are constructed from numerous individual porcelain components combined with altered wood or metal. Through the process of creating these wall sculptures, she transforms the handmade and wood and metal into something that suggests growth, change, and life from decay. Ms. O’Brien will offer a free workshop on Saturday, September 12 at 2:00 pm at the Dechow Farm in Port Oneida.

Sleeping Bear Dunes Partially Reopens Dune Climb, Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, and Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail
The Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive and Dune Climb within Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (Lakeshore) have partially reopened to the public. The Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail has been cleared from Glen Haven to Empire, and this section is now open to the public. These areas were closed after a windstorm on Sunday, August 2 caused severe damage in the area. Leelanau County is still recovering from this emergency.
