Juneteenth Freedom Celebration

SELMA, AL - This year's Juneteenth Freedom Celebration will be held at Phoenix Park on Water Avenue hosted by the Ancient Africa, Enslavement and Civil War Museum and the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail's Selma Interpretive Center on Saturday, June 15, 2013 from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM. You are invited to share in the fellowship and festivities as our community gathers to commemorate one of the most important moments in our nation's history; emancipation.

The event will feature Unity Capoeira from Montgomery, Alabama, and Sister Abayomi (Renee Goodall) of the Journey to the Center of the Arts performing dance and storytelling of African American folktales with several children's groups.

Juneteenth commemorates the release of approximately four million people of African descent from the bonds of slavery at the end of the Civil War. Although the war ended in April of 1865, sadly, in some areas of the country the news did not spread very quickly. For those areas, it took months. On June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger arrived in Texas to issue General Order 3. This order executed what the Emancipation Proclamation intended in January of 1863. All enslaved Africans were freed.

Join us for a day of reflection, music, dancing and many children's activities to acknowledge history, freedom, education and achievement. This event is FREE to the public. For more information, please contact the Selma Interpretive Center at 334-872-0509 or visit www.nps.gov/semo.
