The Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park Fire Management Program will be conducting a prescribed burn beginning on Monday, October 20, 2014, weather and air quality conditions permitting. The 1,485 acre burn is located south of the East Fork of the Kaweah River, bordered by Mosquito Creek to the east and Avalanche Creek to the west. The Mosquito Prescribed Burn is being conducted to reduce hazardous fuels and to restore the natural fire cycle to the East Fork of the Kaweah River. This burn provides crucial protection for the residents and visitors to the Silver City and Mineral King areas, and is part of a long term project to ensure safety to all. Historically, periodic fires would take place in this area approximately every 50 to 100 years. There is no known fire history for the unit;therefore, the Mosquito Burn is considered to be a restoration burn. Aerial operations will be the primary source of ignitions on the burn. Engines will also be on the ground conducting holding operations. Smoke can be expected in the Mineral King Valley, as well as potentially in the Three Rivers area. Area closures are expected to be minimal. The Tar Gap Trail will remain closed, due to its proximity to the burn. Would you like more information about fire?
