SEQUOIA AND KINGS CANYON NATIONAL PARKS, Calif. October 8, 2023 – Fire management staff at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are postponing implementation of the Grant Grove Prescribed Burn, in the Grant Grove area of Kings Canyon National Park, due to dry fuel conditions within the unit. The parks hope to reschedule the prescribed burn, which was formerly scheduled to begin next week, for later this fall, but anticipate that it will be necessary to wait for the area to receive precipitation.
“Every time we do a prescribed burn, we evaluate and reevaluate the risks and potential for success based on current and expected conditions in the field,” said Fire Management Officer Leif Mathiesen. “Right now, we have concerns about the fire effects that could result from burning on the dry end of the prescription. We will continue to monitor fuel moistures and look for opportunities in the coming weeks.”
