Sisneros Family

Don Federico (Fred) Sisneros (1894-1988) was a man who devoted his life to keeping the history of our park alive. His family moved next to the Abo church site in 1869. Fred's dad owned the land with the church and asked young Fred to look after the mission. Later on, Fred became the caretaker of Abo when it turned into a state monument in New Mexico in 1938. When Abo joined Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument in 1981, Fred was recognized as one of the oldest park rangers in the country, a title that still matters in our agency's history! One of Fred's last wishes was to be buried under the Juniper tree at the Abo site, where he rests today.
