Closure Order # [24-002]
February 16, 2024

EFFECTIVE February 16, 2024, at 2:00p.m. - until damage assessments and repairs can be completed.

Closures, restrictions, and public use limits:

Closure Order – Portion of a Park Area: Under the authority provided to the Superintendent in 36 CFR 1.5, the following park areas and facilities are closed, effective the afternoon of February 16, 2024, until damage assessments and repairs can be completed:

• Solstice Canyon.
Authority: 36 CFR 1.5(a)(1)

Notice: This administrative order applies to all individuals subject to the regulatory authority of the National Park Service (NPS) within the boundaries of Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, including park visitors, government employees, concession employees, park residents and stakeholders, except as follows: State or Federal Government employees engaged in official duties

Finding: From the period of January 31, 2024, through February 2, 2024, the Malibu area received over 12” of precipitation. Like other park units, Solstice Canyon experienced increased soil moisture and debris slides. Currently, a debris slide has impacted the main trail between Keller House and the Sostomo Trail junction. Another weather event is projected to affect the area with rain, wind, and associated risk levels ranging from moderate to major.

These directives require the NPS to take the actions identified above because:

Solstice Canyon was closed during the historic atmospheric river storm. It will remain closed until damage assessments and repairs can be completed. A debris slide and partial trail washout is blocking authorized and emergency vehicle access north of the Sostomo Trail junction. NPS personnel are in the process of determining how severely trail stability has been impacted and if the trail is safe for foot travel.

This order is effective from February 16, 2024, at 2:00 pm until damage assessments and repairs can be completed, at which time the order will be modified or rescinded when conditions warrant.

Approval:
/s/ David Schifsky, Acting Superintendent, February 16, 2024.
