2023: Perhaps a new purpose?

The Request for Proposals closed at the end of 2022 and a potential lessee was selected. Acadia National Park and Saint Croix Island IHS are working in conjunction with our regional leasing office to determine the best way to move forward with the vision of the potential lessee. The leasing process for National Park facilities is different than it would for a residential property so check back for more information and announcements once the lease is finalized.

2018–2019: Determining the Disposition of the McGlashan-Nickerson House

The National Park Service (NPS) determined that the McGlashan-Nickerson House is not a fundamental resource of Saint Croix Island International Historic Site and is no longer necessary for administrative purposes or visitor services. The NPS, therefore, declared the house excess to the agency’s needs. The NPS lacks the resources to stabilize, rehabilitate, and maintain the historic structure. The purpose of this planning effort was to identify and evaluate reasonable alternatives for disposing of the house.

In October 2018, the National Park Service prepared a combined environmental assessment / assessment of effect (EA) to determine the disposition of the McGlashan-Nickerson House. Based on comments from the public, the NPS developed the Revised Environmental Assessment/Assessment of Effect for the McGlashan-Nickerson House (“Revised EA”). In September 2019, after taking into account feedback received during a public comment period for the Revised EA, the NPS selected the proposed new alternative “Seek to Preserve McGlashan-Nickerson House through a Lease with the Option to Demolish if Unsuccessful (NPS Preferred Alternative and Proposed Action).” (See the September 9, 2019, news release “National Park Service Selects Alternative for the McGlashan-Nickerson House” for additional details.) The selected action, described on pages 11 to 13 and illustrated in Figure 7 on page 13 of the Revised EA, can be found on the NPS Planning, Environment, and Public Comment (PEPC) website. The PEPC website also includes the signed Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI), which includes the amended Section 106 Programmatic Agreement.

On October 10, 2019, the NPS announced it was seeking proposals from interested parties to lease the historic McGlashan-Nickerson House. 2009: Facilities Development Plan

The National Park Service created the Facilities Development Plan to guide the treatment of existing buildings and possible development of new facilities on the mainland at Saint Croix Island International Historic Site.
